YANTIAN KINDERGARTEN
Shenzhen, Guangzhou
2019
The original building of Shenzhen Yantian Kindergarten is too old and needs to be rebuilt to meet increasing enrolment and provide a more flexible environment for new curriculum.
A key problem of the site is that high-rise buildings on the south block crucial sunlight. This became the starting point of the design. After calculation, the building is placed in the corner of the site to maximize available sunlight. Subsequently, parts of the building are opened up for sunlight to reach further into the building and create maximum ventilation. The top of the building is also curved to reduce blocking city views. At the entrance the building is opened up, allowing a colorful passage for visitors.
Self-directed learning spaces for children are also employed in the design. For example, small spaces on the outer wall are designed at a kids’ scale and can be customized by kids, giving them autonomy and cultivating their confidence and motivation.
